By Sr. Mary Denyse
Sr. Martha Joachim, born Ngoc Chau Nguyen, comes from a humble village in Vietnam, where faith and family were at the heart of her upbringing. She was raised by loving and responsible parents alongside her four siblings, and together they lived a simple but faith-filled life, waking up early each day for 4:00 AM Mass. Her grandparents and parents played a big role in nurturing her love for God, planting the seeds of her vocation early on.
In high school, Sr. Martha began to feel God calling her to religious life. It was a quiet but steady feeling, one she held close and allowed to grow each day. With the support of her family, especially her uncle, Fr. Joachim, and her cousin, Sr. Agnes Cecilia, she was introduced to the Religious of the Assumption (RA) sisters. In 2011, she took a brave step and joined the RA community in Vietnam. She spent her college years with them, studying Early Childhood Education while deepening her relationship with God through four years of religious formation.
In 2016, her journey took her to the Philippines, where she continued her formation as a postulant and novice. On July 3, 2019, she made her First Vows at the Our Lady of the Assumption Chapel in Makati. It was a day she would never forget, as she offered herself to God with the Sacred Heart as her chosen mystery. After her vows, she dedicated herself to further study, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies from the Institute of Formation and Religious Studies (IFRS) in Cubao.
Since then, Sr. Martha has been sent to different communities for her apostolate work, each place becoming a new chapter in her story of service. Most recently, she arrived in Iloilo on October 16, 2023. Through all the changes and challenges, she has always felt God walking beside her. In the hardest moments, His love has been her strength. The words engraved on her ring, “Remain in my love” (John 15:9), are not just a reminder but a promise—one she clings to, knowing God’s love will never fail her.
Now, 14 years into her religious life, Sr. Martha looks back with gratitude. She thanks God for every step of the way, every joy and struggle, knowing He has been with her all along. And as she looks to the future, she trusts that her journey with God will continue, deepening her love for Him until the end of her days.
