September Editorial: In Mary’s Embrace. Celebrating Faith, Wisdom, and Leadership.

September is always a month of joy for the Assumption community as we celebrate the birthday of our Blessed Mother. This year, that joy is made even more meaningful with the historic investiture of Sister Irene, r.a. Her leadership reminds us that in Mary’s embrace, we find the strength to serve, the wisdom to guide, and the courage to lead.

The Assumption Alumnae Association was honored to take part in the Investiture of Sr. Irene, r.a. AAA President Dette Aruego led the invocation, while AAA Vice President Pudgy Garcia delivered a heartfelt message on behalf of the alumnae community. Seated with Sr. Ana, they represented the love and support of the entire Assumption sisterhood.

In this issue, we gather stories of how Mary’s love continues to unite her children across time and place. From alumnae chapters around the world, we see how devotion to Mama Mary remains alive and deeply felt. From our jubilarians of HS Class 1960 and 1970, we hear the wisdom of those who have walked with her through decades of prayer, devotion, and faith-filled living. Their reflections are gentle reminders to the younger generations that Mary’s companionship endures in every season of life.

The spirit of Mary is also present in the AAAA Vancouver Retreat, where our Old Girls from the Americas came together to pray, reconnect, and find refreshment in community. Likewise, in our Alumnae in Focus and Get to Know our r.a., we turn to Sister Maitel Roceles, r.a., whose joyful “yes” in religious life mirrors Mary’s own fidelity and simplicity.

Even in the world of athletics, Mary’s embrace can be felt. This year, Assumption is proud to host the WNCAA, a celebration not only of competition and school spirit but also of the inspiring bond between Assumption alumnae moms and their athlete daughters. It is a portrait of faith, teamwork, and the values that endure across generations.

Opening Ceremonies of the 56th WNCAA. As one AC Family, together with the AC Basic Education Department and AC Family Council, we stood proud to host this season of the WNCAA.

We also take this moment to say Thank You, Ola—a heartfelt tribute to Dr. Regala and her legacy of service and leadership. And as we look ahead, we prepare for the 2025 AAA BOT Elections, where we introduce the candidates who will carry forward the mission of the Assumption Alumnae Association with faith and purpose. Their vision ensures that the Association remains rooted in its Marian values while moving forward with courage and compassion.

This issue also highlights the joy of community through “One AC. One Heart.” As this is the second edition for our college alumnae community, it has been consistent from the first edition – it is simple yet meaningful & very impactful. In moments of laughter, storytelling, and reflection, we see how faith and friendship come together, forming the heart of what it means to be truly Assumption.

Dette gave her opening remarks, emphasizing that Assumption is a home to many Old Girls. The doors for them are always open.
Together with Sister Irene, Tina Garcia (High School 1980 and College 1984) of the Career Management and Alumnae Relations Office and Totow Crisostomo (College 1984), who worked with Assumption College for many years.

Finally, in our Lifestyle & Culture section, we feature the Mama Mary and Her Children book series by Rowie Juan Matti (HS 1984), a creative offering that captures the timeless beauty of Marian devotion through storytelling.

Each story in this edition of Assumpta Magazine is a testament that in Mary’s embrace, we are one family—rooted in faith, strengthened by wisdom, and inspired to lead with love.
