JOANNA RODRIGUEZ – CHAN | SME Awardee | HS 1993
It has been 29 years since I received the greatest award of my life, the Saint Marie Eugenie award; and there has never been a day that SME hasn’t influenced my life. I have been able to fulfill my lifelong dream to be of service to others, by being an instrument of God to heal others. Through the many years of trials, hardships and sacrifices to achieve my dream of becoming a doctor, I have always reminded myself that this is my calling, and my life must indeed be a constant yes to God. There were many times when circumstances tested my patience and kindness, then I would remember … “To see the best side of others is a great gift…” , and that’s all I needed to remind myself to understand and show love and kindness.
This pandemic has changed and challenged many of us. Others have frequently wondered, “why is God doing this to our world? Is he punishing us? Is this the end? “ No one can really tell what the Lord has planned for us, but whenever I’m in doubt, I always remember “Yes to God…” and I am at peace and accept His will for me. No matter what challenges I faced in the past two years, I never fail to thank God for everything and trust in His greater plan and will.
If SME were alive today, I think she would see that the lack of faith in our Father is one of the most pressing problem. Most people have lost their way and their faith in God, thus acting selfishly, without thinking of the consequences of their actions. And this is happening in all sectors of society around the world, whether due to the pandemic, the current hostility and inhumane acts of Russia towards Ukraine, and even the upcoming elections in our country. Thus, it is our mission to bring His Kingdom into the lives of all those we encounter. Showing compassion, kindness, understanding, generosity, humility and love are daily acts we can do to become an instrument of God in transforming others, one person at a time.
